Concealed Blinds for Shaped Windows

Shaped windows require specialist shading products and a local shading specialist to assist. Blindspace boxes can be installed on all sides of the window for any type of shaped retractable blinds.

for Bottom-Up Cellular Blinds

  • The space required to conceal cellular blinds is less than the space required to conceal shaped roller blinds of the same size.
  • The opening width of cellular blind boxes is typically 130mm, whereas the box depth depends on the window height. A tall window requires a tall blind resulting in a larger stack of cellular blinds.
  • For smaller triangular windows, 130x130 head boxes can be used, whereas for taller windows, 130x170 or even 130x200 can be used.
  • When using side boxes, these can be mitred in the top corner or a short hem bar box can be used. These options should be considered together with a local shading specialist.
  • When side boxes are used, light gaps on the sides of the triangular blinds can be avoided, and the best room darkening (blackout) achieved.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist to determine what space is required for your shaped blind consideration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the opening gap in the box when installed within the floor?

The opening gap depends on the cellular blinds used as there are both smaller and bigger honeycomb shapes. Typically, the opening gap is between 35-50mm.

If installed within the floor, can you walk on the box cover?

No, it is not recommended to walk on the box cover. However, it is possible in cellular blinds installations as there is often space inside the head box to support the cover plate from below, next to the blind stack.

Why would you use a hem bar box in a triangular window?

Shaped cellular blinds typically have a short hem bar or rail that the pulling cords are connected to. To fully cover the top of the window, there needs to be space inside the Blindspace boxes for this hem bar. This can be achieved with deeper side boxes that are mitred in the top or with a short hem bar box in the top. Consult with a local shading specialist.

How do you close the Blindspace cover plates in the corners of triangular windows?

Cover plates may need to be cut into shorter sections to be closed where there is room and then pushed sideways into the corner. One side of the triangle may end up with 2 or 3 cover plate sections with thin hairlines between them.

What box configuration can be used when there are sliding doors or bi-folding doors below the shaped window?

A common situation in gable end windows is to have glass doors below the shaped section. Blindspace has developed an S-shaped pelmet that can house one shaped blind going up and a rectangular blind going down. See Bottom-Up Cellular Blinds in S Pelmet.

for Bottom-Up Roller Blinds

  • Shaped roller blinds are specialist shading products that require local experts to consult with the project. Different shading products are available in different markets.
  • There are triangular (different variations) and pentagon shaped blinds, all typically concealed below the window in a horizontal head box with the opening facing upwards.
  • The box size required to conceal shaped bottom-up blinds depends on the shading system that is used. Typically starting from 150x150mm head boxes, however some systems require larger boxes.
  • When using side boxes, these can be mitred in the top corner or a short hem bar box can be used. These options should be considered together with a local shading specialist.
  • When side boxes are used, light gaps on the sides of the triangular blinds can be reduced and the best room darkening (blackout) achieved.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist about what space is required for your shaped blind consideration.

How big is the opening gap in the box when installed within the floor?

The opening gap depends on the blinds and hem bars used as there are both smaller and bigger systems. Typically the opening gap is 50mm.

If installed within the floor, can you walk on the box cover?

No, it is not recommended to walk on the box cover. To support the cover plate from below, a larger head box may be required. Consult with a shading specialist and the contractor.

What box configuration can be used when there are sliding doors or bi-folding doors below the shaped window?

Roller blinds in contrast to cellular blinds take up more space and the bottom-up roller blind and top-down roller blind need to be installed next to each other or one above the other. In any situation, you need 2x the space.

for Top-Down Cellular Blinds

  • The opening width of cellular blind boxes is typically 130mm, whereas the box depth depends on the window height.
  • For smaller triangular windows, sloping 130x130 head boxes can be used, whereas for taller windows, 130x170 or even 130x200 boxes can be used. Consult with the specialist blind manufacturer.
  • The two head boxes are typically mitred at both ends to fit the sloping ceiling.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist about what space is required for your shaped blind consideration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the box options when concealing shaped top-down cellular blinds?

The most common configuration is two sloping head boxes. An alternative is to use two side boxes to avoid light gaps on the sides. However, with two top-down blinds, there will anyway be some light coming in between the two blinds.

What are the advantages of using top-down cellular blinds?

There are no visible cords, and in contrast to floor boxes, there is no risk of dirt or other things falling into the concealment box.

How much space do I need to allow for in the ceiling?

For smaller triangular windows, sloping 130x130 head boxes can be used, whereas for taller windows, 130x170 or even 130x200 boxes can be used. Consult with the specialist blind manufacturer.

Can Blindspace mitre cut the sloping boxes, or is this done on site?

Blindspace can provide boxes cut to specific angles; however, most often, boxes are ordered oversized and cut on site for perfect adjustment to the building.

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Bottom-Up Cellular Blinds in S Pelmet

  • The S pelmet is a custom solution developed by Blindspace and Grants in London, using the Blindspace cover as a facia visible towards the room.
  • Holes are drilled through the S shape, so the profile can be fixed to the wall or horizontal section of the window structure.
  • Blindspace boxes and cover plates are typically powder coated to perfectly match the window frames.
  • The typical S-shaped pelmet is 130x130mm in dimension with 130x50 side boxes. It can be made to any size with cover plates up to 200mm as side cover.
  • An alternative to using side boxes in the lower section is to use TrackTrim profiles to recess the blind side channels.
  • With boxes on all sides of the triangular window and side channels in side boxes or recessed TrackTrim profiles, great room darkening results can be achieved.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist if this is something they can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there no cover plate being used?

The side of the pelmet is actually a Blindspace cover plate.

How is the S Pelmet fixed to the wall or glass frame?

The Pelmet is either fixed with strong adhesives or with screws, accessed through holes in the S-shaped pelmet. The cover plate can be removed and holes can be made through the profile.

Are there any end caps for the S Pelmet?

Yes, Blindspace provides special end caps made to fit the S-shaped profile.

What are the advantages of using TrackTrim along the sides instead of side boxes?

Some prefer to have the extra space behind the covers in the side boxes. Others prefer the minimalist look of only the flush-mounted side channels. TrackTrim channels take up less space along the sides of the window.

Can this be done with roller blinds?

No. Roller blinds take up much more space and can’t be combined in an S pelmet like this. It would also leave the lower roller exposed towards the room.
