  • Head boxes can be installed within the ceiling or wall, and are typically the same length as the window opening.
  • Boxes are typically installed below or next to structural elements, sometimes with raised or split lintels.
  • Typical box sizes for cellular blinds are 130x130mm for blinds up to 2,9m wide and 2,6m high. There are many different types of cellular blinds and we always recommend consulting with a local shading specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space is required toconceal blinds?

The space required to conceal cellular blinds depends on what shading product that is being prepared for. For cellular blinds up to 2,9m wide, 130x130mm boxes can typically be used. Consult with a local shading specialist that knows what products are available in your market.

What is the difference between pleated, cellular, Duette, honeycell and honeycomb blinds?

There are pleated and cellular blinds with different shapes and material. These are often referred to as Duette blinds, honeycell blinds or honeycomb blinds. Duette is a registered trademark of Hunter Douglas, however the term is often used to describe the product category. We have decided to use the term cellular blinds as a contrast to roller blinds.

I will need a box for a blind stack that is140mm high, can you help me?

Blindspace can create custom boxes to any size. Large and shaped cellular blinds are often installed in 130x180mm or even 130x200mm boxes.

What determines the distance neededto the window?

The blind must be able to pass any protruding door handles. If the box is installed right up against the window/door, the blind can come out on the room side of the box.

How do you install Blindspace head boxes?

See installation instructions. Boxes are fixed with screws through the back of the box and through the mud-in flanges. Scrim tape should always be used to reduce the risk of cracks.

Blackout Blinds With Side Channels

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Roller Blind with Zipped Side Channels

  • Side channels can be used to remove light gaps on the side of a blind and hold the blind in place at all times.
  • Side channels can also be used with flyscreens.
  • Blindspace provides head boxes and side boxes to house both blinds and side channels.
  • The head box is installed above the side boxes, inside the wall or ceiling.
  • The space in the side boxes can be accessed and used when installing the blind into the head box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space to allow for?

The space required for both head boxes and side boxes depends on the shading products to be installed. Contact Blindspace or a local partner.

What is the depth of the side box?

For windows and doors, side boxes are typically between 50mm and 70mm, depending on the depth of the side channel.

Why is the side box as wide as the head box?

Side boxes typically have the same width as the head box for a consistent look around the window. It also provides the extra space when installing a blind that is wider than the window opening.

Do you use side channels inside side boxes?

Yes, most often the blind side channels are installed inside Blindspace side boxes with a cover plate to minimize the gap.

Dual Blinds Stacked

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Stacked Dual Roller Blinds

  • The box size required for dual blinds highly depends on what products are being installed and with what brackets.
  • Some manufacturers have dual brackets for stacked dual blinds.
  • Blinds from two different manufacturers or a blind and a flyscreen manufacturer can also be combined inside a larger head box.
  • One of the blinds, or both blinds, can use side channels and side boxes. Blackout blinds and flyscreens are typically used with side channels.
  • The blinds can come out of the box towards the window for the smallest gaps or towards the room.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist to determine what space is required for your dual blind consideration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dual blinds and why would you have them?

Dual blinds (also known as double blinds or day and night blinds), can combine two different fabrics and be individually controlled. The most common fabric combination is screen blinds for shading or privacy and blackout blinds for room darkening.

What are the box options when concealing dual blinds?

Two blinds can be installed on a dual bracket, on separate brackets stacked one above the other, and side-by-side. When dual brackets are used and when one blind is installed above the other, both blinds come out either on the window side or the room side of the box. With side-by-side installations, the two blinds come out in a centered opening.

When to have dual blinds stacked and when side-by-side?

Dual blinds take up more space than single blinds and sometimes you can make the space available with a tall box and sometimes with a wide box. Stacked blinds can be installed closer to the window and a tall concealment box is less visible than a box with two cover plates for side-by-side installation.

What is the difference between dual bracket blinds and stacked blinds?

Some manufacturers provide blind brackets to mount two roller blinds, one above the other, we call these dual brackets. When two blinds are installed one above the other using separate brackets, we refer to these as stacked blinds.

How do you install the lower blind if not on a dual bracket?

When installing two separate brackets, the lower blind needs to be side mounted inside the Blindspace box. There are bendable screw bit extensions that can be used to mount the blind brackets on the side.

Dual Blinds Side By Side

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Standard Dual Roller Blinds Side by Side

  • The box size required for dual blinds side-by-side is similar to that of two independent blinds in two separate boxes.
  • Typical box sizes are 200x100mm for blinds up to 2.4m wide, 260x130mm for 3.5m wide, and bigger boxes for bigger blinds.
  • Blinds from two different manufacturers or a blind and a flyscreen manufacturer can also be combined inside a wider head box.
  • One of the blinds, or both blinds, can use side channels and side boxes. Blackout blinds and flyscreens are typically used with side channels.
  • Side boxes can be made the same as the head box for a symmetrical look; however, these side boxes become very wide to match the head box and smaller boxes can also be used.
  • The two blinds will come out in the middle of the box. If you want to have one blind as close to the window as possible, two separate head boxes can be used, with the opening in each box towards the window.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist to determine what space is required for your dual blind consideration.

Can two standard boxes be used instead of a wide custom box?

Yes, two standard boxes, 100x100 or 130x130, can be installed next to each other, for side-by-side installations. With a custom box, there is more flexibility in how you use the space.

Bottom Up Blinds Daylight Privacy

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Tensioned Bottom-Up Roller Blind

  • Bottom-up blinds are specialist products that require a local shading specialist to assist.
  • For this application, tensioned blinds are installed below the window.
  • Depending on the shading product used, blinds can be pulled up using side channels within Blindspace side boxes with no visible or with visible wires pulling up the blind.
  • The most common configuration is a four-sided frame of boxes around the window.
  • With shading products such as Guthrie Douglas TESS660, a three-sided frame can be used with no visible wires. See drawing tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space is required to conceal a bottom-up blind?

The box size required for bottom-up blinds highly depends on what products that are being installed. A manual roller blind that is lifted manually may sit in a small 100x100mm box whereas a motorized TESS660 may need a 135x210 or 155x230mm depending on configuration. See drawing tool.

How much space is required for side channels?

The box size required for side channels highly depends on what products that are being installed. A TESS660 uses side channels that require 80mm deep side boxes. See drawing tool.

Can bottom-up blinds be shaped for awkward shaped windows?

Yes. Both cellular blinds and roller blinds can be made in awkward shapes including triangular. Please consult with a local shading specialist.

Retrofitting

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Retrofitting

  • In retro-fit situations, boxes are typically installed without any flanges.
  • Depending on the situation, the least visual impact may be to have the box in the same color as the ceiling, the wall, or the window frames.
  • In these situations, there is typically no wiring made to the window heads and battery-powered blinds are preferred.
  • Typical box sizes are 100x100mm for blinds up to 2.4m wide, 130x130mm for 3.5m wide, and bigger boxes for bigger blinds.
  • The blinds can come out of the box towards the window for the smallest gaps (standard/regular roll) or towards the room (reverse roll).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide window blinds when the ceiling or wall has been closed or when in an established building?

Yes. Walls can be extended, ceilings or part of ceilings can be lowered to allow for hidden boxes, and concealment boxes can be retrofitted or surface-mounted and made to blend in as much as possible.

How much space should be allowed for?

The space required to conceal blinds depends on what shading product that is being prepared for. As a guide: for blinds up to 2.4m wide, 100x100mm, and for blinds up to 3.5m wide, 130x130mm. Consult with a local shading specialist.

How and where do you bring in cables to power electric blinds?

Consult with your local shading specialist. Different installations require cables to come into the box either through the top or the side. In retrofit situations, battery-operated blinds with no power cables are also used.

What determines the distance needed to the window?

The blind must be able to pass any protruding door handles. If the box is installed right up against the window/door, the blind can come out on the room side of the box. When future-proofing, it is important to consider this as the blinds will only be installed at a later date.

Future Proofing

Blindspace ® EXAMPLE DRAWINGS

for Future-proof with slot

  • Concealment boxes can be specified and installed to enable future installation of concealed blinds. By preparing also with wiring, electric blinds can be installed at a later date without relying on battery-powered options.
  • Preparation can be made with head box only for free hanging blinds or with head box and side boxes in rooms where room darkening may be wanted.
  • Standard cover plates can be used to show the gap where the blinds would come out. Closed cover plates can also be used to fully close the box. Closed covers need replacing when blinds are installed.

Blinds are often combined with curtains and by recessing the curtain tracks.

A clean minimalist design can be kept. To maximize the view through the windows, the curtain stack can be placed next to the window, around a corner or recessed into a wall.
