Concealed Blinds for Skylights

Skylight blinds are best concealed using a four-sided frame of Blindspace boxes, hiding all blind mechanisms. In some situations, three sided, two-sided and one-sided box installation is required.

Four-Sided Frame

Four-Sided Frame

  • With a four-sided frame, only the blind fabric is visible when the blind is fully deployed. With all other box configurations, either the hem bar or pulling wires/side channels are visible when the blind is deployed.
  •
  • The box sizes required for skylight blinds depend on what shading system that is being planned for. Some systems require larger head boxes however may have smaller side boxes, whilst another system may fit inside a smaller head box, however requiring deeper side boxes.
  •
  • Typically, the head box and hem bar box are of the same size, with side boxes having the same opening width but less depth.
  •
  • Larger skylight blinds require larger head boxes and hem bar boxes, but side boxes typically use the same side channels and box depth as smaller skylight blinds.
  •
  • Consult with a local shading specialist before you specify concealed skylight blinds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space to allow for?

The space required for skylight blinds depends on the shading products to be installed. Not all skylight systems are available in all markets. Contact Blindspace or a local partner.

What is the depth of the side box?

For skylight blinds, side boxes are typically between 50mm and 100mm, depending on the depth of the side channel.

Why is the side box as wide as the head box?

Side boxes typically have the same width as the head box for a consistent look around the skylight. It also provides the extra space needed during installation as the blind is wider than the skylight opening.

Is there a way to use a frame but with a hem bar box that is smaller than the head box?

Yes, with skylight blinds that have the tensioning system inside the side channels, such as Guthrie Douglas TESS660, the hem bar box only needs to be big enough to hide the hem bar, 100mm.

Three-Sided Frame

Three-Sided Frame

  • With a three-sided frame, the hem bar is visible on the opposite end of the head box when the blind is fully deployed.
  • The box sizes required for skylight blinds depend on the shading system being planned for.
  • The most common 3-sided tensioned blind system is Guthrie Douglas TESS660, available in a standard and a larger version. The standard version uses a 135x230 head box with 135x80 side boxes, whereas the larger version requires a 155x250 head box with 155x80 side boxes.
  • Consult with a local shading specialist before you specify concealed skylight blinds, as all systems are not available in all markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

In what situations would you use a three-sided frame?

A three-sided frame is used when there is no space for a hem bar box or in eaves window situations where there is a glass wall at the end of the skylight.

What are dual blinds and why would you have them?

Dual blinds (also known as double blinds or day and night blinds) can combine two different fabrics and be individually controlled. The most common fabric combination is screen blinds for shading or privacy and blackout blinds for room darkening.

What are the box options when concealing dual blinds?

Two blinds can be installed on a dual bracket, on separate brackets stacked one above the other, or side-by-side. When dual brackets are used and one blind is installed above the other, both blinds come out either on the window side or the room side of the box. With side-by-side installations, the two blinds come out in a centered opening.

When to have dual blinds stacked and when side-by-side?

Dual blinds take up more space than single blinds. Stacked blinds can be installed closer to the window, and a tall concealment box is less visible than a box with two cover plates for side-by-side installation. Sometimes you can make the space available with a tall box and sometimes with a wide box.

Can two standard boxes be used instead of a wide custom box?

Yes, two standard boxes, 100x100 or 130x130, can be installed next to each other for side-by-side installations. With a custom box, there is more flexibility in how you use the space.

Head Box + Hembar Box

Head Box + Hembar Box

  • The box size required for dual blinds side-by-side is similar to that of two independent blinds in two separate boxes. Typical box sizes are 200x100mm for blinds up to 2.4m wide, 260x130mm for 3.5m wide, and bigger boxes for larger blinds.
  • Blinds from two different manufacturers or a blind and a fly screen manufacturer can also be combined inside a wider head box.
  • One or both blinds can use side channels and side boxes. Blackout blinds and flyscreens are typically used with side channels. Side boxes can be made the same size as the head box for a symmetrical look, but these side boxes become very wide to match the head box; smaller boxes can also be used.
  • The two blinds will come out in the middle of the box. If you want one blind as close to the window as possible, two separate head boxes can be used, with the opening in each box towards the window.
  • Consult with your local shading specialist about what space is required for your dual blind consideration.
