Future-Proof for Free Hanging Blinds

  • Concealment boxes can be specified and installed for future installation of concealed blinds, with wiring prepared for electric blinds to avoid battery reliance.
  • Preparation options include using a head box only for free hanging blinds or a head box with side boxes for rooms requiring room darkening.
  • Standard cover plates can show the gap for the blinds, while closed cover plates can fully close the box and need replacing upon blind installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space should be allowed for?

The space required to conceal blinds depends on the shading product being prepared for. As a guide: for blinds up to 2.4m wide, allow 100x100mm, and for blinds up to 3.5m wide, allow 130x130mm. Consult with a local shading specialist.

What do you do when you want to install blinds?

The closed cover plates are removed, and new cover plates are re-ordered to provide a gap suitable for the blinds being installed.

How and where do you bring in cables to power electric blinds?

Consult with your local shading specialist. Different installations require cables to come into the box either through the top or the side. The size of the cable entry hole also varies depending on the cable connections used. When future-proofing, it can be good to provide extra space for flexibility.

What determines the distance needed to the window?

The blind must be able to pass any protruding door handles. If the box is installed right up against the window/door, the blind can come out on the room side of the box. When future-proofing, it is important to consider this as the blinds will only be installed at a later date.

How do you install Blindspace head boxes?

See installation instructions. Boxes are fixed with screws through the back of the box and through the mud-in flanges. Scrim tape should always be used to reduce the risk of cracks.

Future-Proof for Blackout Blinds with Side Channels

  • When windows are prepared with both a head box and side boxes, more options are available for blackout blinds and insect screens.
  • The closed boxes provide an option for future installation. If only the head box is needed for a free hanging blind, side boxes can remain closed.
  • The space required to conceal blinds depends on what shading product that is being prepared for. As a starting point when preparing for head box and side boxes, 130x130mm head box and 130x50mm side boxes are recommended. For some brands, such as Lutron, side channels require 70mm deep side boxes.Consult with a local shading specialist.
  • Standard cover plates can be used to show the gap where the blinds would come out. Closed cover plates can also be used to fully close the box. Closed covers need replacing when blinds are installed.

Do side boxes sit below or outside the head box?

Side boxes are installed below the head box so the end caps of the head box align with the back of the side boxes.

Future-Proof for Skylight Blinds

  • The box sizes required for skylight blinds depend on what shading system that is being planned for. Some systems require larger head boxes however may have smaller side boxes, whilst another system may fit inside a smaller head box, however requiring deeper side boxes.
  • Typically, the head box and hem bar box are of the same size with side boxes having the same opening width but less depth.
  • Larger skylight blinds require larger head boxes and hem bar boxes, however side boxes typically use the same side channels and box depth as smaller skylight blinds.
  • Consult with a local shading specialist before you future-proof concealed skylight blinds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space to allow for?

The space required for skylight blinds depends on the shading products to be installed. Not all skylight systems are available in all markets. Contact Blindspace or a local partner.

What is the depth of the side box?

For skylight blinds, side boxes are typically between 50mm and 100mm, depending on the depth of the side channel.

Why is the side box as wide as the head box?

Side boxes typically have the same width as the head box for a consistent look around the skylight. It also provides the extra space needed during installation as the blind is wider than the skylight opening.

Is there a way to use a frame but with a hem bar box that is smaller than the head box?

Yes, with skylight blinds that have the tensioning system inside the side channels, such as Guthrie Douglas TESS660, the hem bar box only needs to be big enough to hide the hem bar, which is 100mm.
